Hauppauge, NY (May 10, 2007): On Saturday June 2, 2007,10:30am Terry Road in front of the Hauppauge Fire Department Sub-Station 2 will be renamed for firefighter Peter Brennan. Peter a member of FDNY Rescue Company 4 was lost while he and 342 of his brother firefighters were performing valiantly at Manhattan Box 5-5 8087 (World Trade Center). Mr. Brennan joined the Lakeland Volunteer Fire Department at 16 serving for several years before transferring to the Hauppauge Volunteer Fire Department were he served as the 2nd Lieutenant of Company 1. It was his dream to be a firefighter, even while he was a New York City police officer for several years. (Walking a beat in Queens, he rescued an elderly couple from an apartment fire.) Early in the year of 2001 Peter assisted at a fire in Ronkonkoma and helped save three trapped firefighters. For this, Peter was awarded the title of Volunteer Firefighter of the Year. A dinner to honor Peter was to be held in November 2001; instead, they had a dinner to memorialize him. "He died doing what he loved at probably the greatest fire he'd ever been to," said his wife, Erica Brennan. "I can see him on the truck being excited on the way." Peter was posthumously awarded the rank of Chief of Department by the members of the Hauppauge Fire Department. www.hauppaugefire.org.

Local leaders and volunteers from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Islip Area Branch were recognized this weekend at the AAUW NYS Convention in Saratoga Springs for their dedication to AAUW’s mission “to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.”
Members from across the state traveled to the Gideon Putnam Resort and Spa to discuss the future of the organization, attend personal and professional development workshops and network. One of the highlights from the 3 day event was the annual 21st Century Recognition awards breakfast, Saturday morning.
The Islip Area branch was named a Platinum level branch with Platinum level recognition for Community and Campus Outreach and Visibility and Gold level recognition for Membership Development, Diversity, Leadership Development and Technology/Communication. The branch used the opportunity to spotlight Myrna Podolsky as an Emerging Leader. In addition, they were lauded for their work in raising awareness and funds for the Legal Advocacy Fund, which provides funding and a support system for individuals seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in academia. The branch also received recognition for their raising funds and awareness for the Educational Foundation — the world's largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women — which supports aspiring scholars around the globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented.
The AAUW Educational Foundation just released its latest research “Behind the Pay Gap” which shows that just one year out of college, women working full time already earn less than their male colleagues, even when they work in the same field. Ten years after graduation, the pay gap widens.
“The research is so important,” says AAUW NYS Program Vice President Jann Mirchandani, “but it is the work that these women do, bringing the research and a means for positive change into their local community that makes the difference.”
There are 43 AAUW branches in New York with over 3000 members. For information about membership visit: aauw-nys.org/branches/islip.htm. For more information on “Behind the Pay Gap” visit www.aauw.org/research.
